Spare Parts in collaboration with SIMA’s 2020 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival are celebrating the opening night of the festival on Friday October 30th, 2020 with a night of Latin Jazz.
Two exceptionally special groups will be performing:
ALLY’s Monk Project 6.30-7.30pm
Caribé Cuban music and dance 8.00-9.00pm
Combining Jazz, Latin and Caribbean music styles has been a constant rippling pool of inspiration and energy that has fed and helped both groups to grow over the past couple of years. For this night alone ALLY will be performing a program of Latin-inspired versions of one the most unique and individual Jazz artists of all time: Thelonius Monk. The group will be paying tribute to this Jazz giant in the best possible way by performing select tunes their way and infusing every one with Latin groove. Cuban Jazz group Caribé will follow with original compositions inspired by Cuban traditional music, the Orishas and classic styles alongside Cuban dancer and storyteller Adrian Medina. Adrian will be
presenting his Cuba through movement, chants and stories. This is an opportunity to be transported by a night of glorious music played for your mind’s ear and your heart.
About the venue:
Join us to celebrate this night of music medicine in a COVID safe environment. The Australian Institute of Music’s John Painter Hall is a beautifully refurbished theatre with raked seating. In accordance with COVID restrictions 140 people are allowed to attend for a live performance. Drinks and canapés will be available from 6.00pm. When seated the
drinks will come to you!

AIM’s John Painter Hall is located at 1/55 Foveaux St, Surry Hills. It is just a two-minute walk from Sydney’s Central Station and the city’s major bus stops. Another option is using the city’s light rail. Car Parks located nearby are:

Ticket sales to Mentorships:
Tickets are $20 with all proceeds going towards 2 mentorships for Sydney’s emerging Latina musicians. This money will provide lessons with seasoned professionals. Our aim is to help these young women hone their craft and learn new skills to inspire them to create and present wonderful music in the future.
For those who would like to support this event and are unable to attend you can donate the price of a ticket through SIMA. SIMA are a not for profit organisation and can issue you with an appropriate receipt.
